Creepy Nights on Calamo
2007
All Kinds of Things can be
DISTURBED when you go Digging in the Yard!
*(1)
It
all started when we had to excavate part of the yard for some home renovations…
Several feet below the surface, behind
the house towards the stream (Calamo Run) we encountered some strange relics.
Fragments of wood, pieces that looked like an old wagon, metal that resembled
rifle barrels and a sword, and then… human bones.
The “remains” were clad in remnants of
faded cloth, grey in color, with metal belt buckles labeled “CSA”.
So we did a little digging of our own -
at the library.
Back
on December 20th, 1861, Union army forces under Brigadier General
E.O.C. Ord encountered a confederate “foraging” expedition commanded by
Brigadier General J.E.B. Stuart along Dranesville Ridge Road (now known as
Reston Avenue). History records only that these confederates were “foraging” and
fought to ensure the safety of their “wagons”. The confederate forces sacrificed
230 men to protect these precious “wagons”.
From what we found around the wagon, we
think we know why.
In the remains of an old rotted chest
near the wagon are unmistakable fragments of gold… and silver. It seems the
confederates were protecting a treasure shipment – probably on its way to
Richmond to finance the war! Fragments are all that’s left now though.
The soldiers dispatched to escort the
treasure only made it as far as Calamo Run.
We don’t know how they met their fate;
whether it was Union soldiers that caught up with them, or common highwaymen.
But apparently we disturbed them… and they’re determined to get that treasure
back!
Ever since then, we hear strange things
at night. Muffled bangs. Sounds like horses in the distance. Sometimes the sound
of a distant drum cadence coming from the woods.
And the bugs! You’ve never seen so many
disgusting critters. They swarm the carport area on nights when the moon is
full. You can hear them. And feel the CRUNCH under your feet if you walk through
them.
It’s getting mighty CREEPY at night here
on Calamo…
